Lorena, I think it's complicated. My thoughts are, it's generational. It just keeps getting passed on over and over and over again.

Why do Christian leaders like to make people's life so miserable with their impossible demands?

Could be it be that those who go into leadership are just miserable idiots with the desire to spread the "joy" ?

It wasn't until after she carried them away that I thought, "Wait a minute? She's a Christian too! What's up with that?" The only way I could deal with all this was to remember, it was the right thing to do and she'd have to answer to God for her decision to possess sinful and carnal records. At least they were out of my house and away from my children.

I was brainwashed as well PD. :-(

I can't tell you how many times I'd point out to weary Christians, that according to the Bible, Jesus took breaks. He got away from the masses. He was human, apparently. :-)

In the church though, we were to be like Jesus. Not the human part though, but the God part. Invincible, tireless, giving and sacrificing.

He knew who he was. He’s God. He can heal everyone, be nice to everyone, give an audience to everyone…thing is…he didn’t heal & give audience to everyone & wasn’t always nice

Amen, sister. The sweet Jesus ideal they teach in Sunday school is anything but Biblical.

OH ZOE! I just shudder at this post because I would be sick knowing my much loved rock and roll albums were in the house next door!!! Nope, mine got thrown in the trash. I was so convinced it was sinful I tossed (I feel sick just typing this) about 100 classic rock albums. WHAT WAS I THINKING? I wasn't. I was brainwashed. I love music more than just about anything and even have a blog about Classic Rock (in fact I was interviewed on a music radio show last night!).

The good news is that your sons are musicians, that is awesome. If you want I will break into your neighbors house and get your albums back....if you give me a few (just kidding!)

In a world where everyone is a sinner, I understand how it is that people follow the leader &/or the crowd. At the time, maybe they don't know what sin it is that they are standing for, they are going forward for, that they are giving to Jesus...but this they do know, "all have sinned"...right? So whipped up in the excitement, the guilt, the shame, and the power of suggestion, they go forward because to remain, "alone" is to suggest to everyone else that you are too proud (another sin) or too blind to the truth of sin (another sin) or to suggest that you are without sin (a big sin!)...you just go forward. It's easier.

I imagine you made your point. :-)

One of the last church services I attended was on some list of sins, and how we need to “give them to Jesus. Give them to Jesus.” I remember the pastor had demonstrative illustrations for each one and that “Money” was a ball and chain…

Anyhoodle, at the end he gave a sorta-altar call, where one had to stand up to acknowledge how they were going to give their sin to Jesus. He started off slow with one, and maybe 10% stood up. Then he hit Money, and another 30% stood up. At this rate, it was pretty clear what was happening. By the time he hit the last sin, dammit—he was determined to have ‘em all up and standing. And they were. Except one. (How the heck do I give a sin [which I question exists] to Jesus [who I KNOW doesn’t exist]?)

My teenage daughter stood next to me and asked later, “Dad—why didn’t you stand?”

“Because it was an emotional response geared to give people their own satisfaction. It was ‘crowd mentality.’ If I am going to stand, I am going to do it because I mean it, not because the crowd does it. How many of those people really believed it?”

Two weeks later I asked her, “Do you remember what sin you stood for?” She was embarrassed to admit she did not. (I have a good memory, and she knew I would remember.)

Point made. Hopefully.
